I coughed them
     on the Lower East Side
my blood flowed
     on the sidewalk
but I continue
     to walk on
the pain in my stomach
     aching to part

People avoid me
     as though I have AIDS
and the plague of
     junk I don’t savour
but I fill the night
     with poetry
and dance
     to the Bowery
          like her
